At Taiao Architecture & Engineering, we’re driven by a passion for innovative design, sustainable solutions, and a commitment to creating spaces that work with our natural environment here in New Zealand. We strive to be more than an architecture and engineering firm, which is why every aspect of our work reflects our values and vision for a better, more sustainable future.
By considering factors such as functionality and environmental sustainability for simply great design, we take a holistic approach to every project. At Taiao, we believe in open communication and work closely with our clients every step of the way: from initial concept development to final execution, we strive to exceed expectations and deliver exceptional results that stand the test of time.
Since our establishment in 2020, Taiao has achieved significant milestones, including the successful design and build of the “Hihitahi Dreaming” holiday home in Paihia, Bay of Islands. This three-story, steep site project showcased Taiao’s ability to deliver innovative solutions, in even the most challenging environments.
Completing our first end-to-end Taiao design project was another massive milestone: on the “Little Earth House on the Hill” project Taiao served as the sole architect, engineer, and on-site wastewater designer. This project marked a pivotal moment in the Taiao journey, demonstrating our capabilities and expertise in delivering comprehensive solutions for stunning design.
Nev’s journey began at the University of Canterbury, where he studied civil engineering and honed his skills in structural, civil, geotechnical, and coastal engineering. While exploring the mountains of the West Coast, Nev developed a love for nature and sustainability, which ultimately shaped his approach to design and engineering. With nearly 20 years’ experience in engineering and architectural design, Nev found himself at a crossroads, grappling with the tension between engineering solutions and our environment. This fuelled Nev’s desire to create Taiao, a company that’s part of the solution: integrating great design with sustainability and simplicity. Nev’s favourite projects to work on are rammed earth builds, and anything collaborative with fellow designers and engineers that contribute to a more sustainable future for New Zealand.
